Prof. Howard Clinebell verstarb am 13. April in Santa Barbara, Kalifornien, USA.

Professor Dr. Howard Clinebell

Teacher and Friend

The Society for Intercultural Pastoral Care and Counselling - SIPCC has lost a teacher and a friend - Dr. Howard Clinebell.
In 1986 I invited him for the 1st International Seminar for Intercultural Pastoral Care and Counselling. By then he was already very famous in Germany and Europe through his book "Basic Types of Pastoral Care and Counselling" and many other books and articles.
In his presentations in 1986 he brought very new ideas to Europe: He included social responsibility and ecotherapy into his teaching and thinking. He was proclaiming pastoral care as "peace-work".
As organiser I was proud to have this outstanding personality in our first Seminar - and the success encouraged me to continue with them.

In this year 2005 we are able to conduct our 18th Seminar and we will remember him during our meeting.
After having consolidated the Seminars we founded in 1995 our Society. We are happy to be able to celebrate this year our 10th anniversary. Through all the time since 1986 and 1995 Howard Clinebell has accompanied our work as a teacher and friend.
I myself and many other members have met him, listened to him, discussed with him. It always has been inspiring and refreshing to get into contact with him. And even when he was personally not present he has been among us with his ideas and challenges.
Many of his students are connected with SIPCC, I only name Professor Dr. Ronaldo Sathler Rosa, Brazil, Professor Dr. James Farris, Brazil and Professor Dr. Kathleen Greider, USA.
They will help us to keep this giant in the field of care and counselling in our minds and hearts.

To realize the widespread importance of Howard let me mention the following: Putting together our new book on "Ethics and Practice of Care in various Religions and Faiths" an Islamic care-giver is citing in his article Howard Clinebell as his main source of Christian Counselling.
That shows that he has been a person whose fruits grow in many fields - and they will grow in future - and I believe even into the "Kingdom of God".

Shalom, Howard.

Requiescat in pace.
